Virtual Medium Changer Emulator
Technical Description
1. Introduction
Virtual Medium Changer Emulator (VMCE) is a Win32 MFC-based application with graphical user interface. The VMCE runs under Windows 2000/XP/2003. It serves as a centralized emulation tool and completely emulates the SCSI Medium Changer devices.
VMCE allows user to emulate ADIC Scalar libraries and offers full visualization and control over the emulation process. Application can run on the separate PC or on the same PC the Initiator application is running on.
VMCE emulates only Medium Changer device itself. It does not emulate Data Transfer elements as separate SCSI devices.
2. Application features
• Emulation of the Scalar family of ADIC tape libraries: Scalar 100, Scalar 1000, Scalar 10K, and Scalar 10K Dual Aisle.
• Ability to emulate multiple Medium Changer devices simultaneously. Each SCSI target can be started and stopped individually.
• Easy graphical configuration of SCSI targets and logical units (LUN).
• Easy graphical configuration of Medium Changer devices. Configuration data includes standard inquiry data, serial number, layout of elements, additional tape drive element configuration data, media, mechanical movement timing, etc.
• Dynamic visualization of media allocation in the elements. Ability to insert and remove large number of media by one operation.
• Dynamic change of the state of Medium Changer device.
• Easy emulation of SCSI errors. General and Move error options are available. All important error values are fully configurable.
• Easy emulation of Unit Attention conditions. All important values are fully configurable.
• Emulation of Storage Tower modules. Ability to change the state of each Tower Module.
• Emulation of opening and closing front (service) and import/export doors. Element status is updated and corresponding Unit Attention is posted automatically.
• Persistent storage of Medium Changer configuration data that allows multiple emulation sessions. There is no necessity to configure the devices from scratch each time the session is started.
• Emulation of Tape Alert flags for Medium Changer device as well as for all Data Transfer elements.
• Full support and validation of SCSI-2 SCSI command set for Medium Changer devices with all ADIC extensions.
• Logging of all SCSI activity with changeable logging level (nothing, error, warning, information, and data). Each log message has distinct icon that reflects message severity. Contents of log window can be saved in the text file for further analysis.
• VMCE supports the most popular half-inch, DLT, 8mm, and LTO media and tape drives.
