Software-hardware Platform for Storage Solutions
The ultimate goal of the project is to ship storage appliance products that provide turnkey solutions by presenting themselves as backup and storage targets to existing and emerging data protection and archiving applications.The system can be used as the basis for delivering appliances that provide the following functionality:
- virtual tape library;
- SNFS file server;
- CAS data archive;
- NAS server – CIFS and NFS;
- virtual disk;
- object based file system;
- 3rd party solutions – the system can also provide possibility to deliver solutions based on 3rd party applications. It can be used to add value to almost any application server by packaging a standard function such as a backup server or database server together with the required computing and storage resources and integrating that solution into the system framework of simplified management, automatic resource allocations and high reliability, availability and serviceability. Examples of this include:
o backup application servers;
o database application servers.
The system can provide an Integrated Solution Framework and environment that extends the following characteristics to the entire family of delivered solutions:
1. Scalability – all aspects of the solution must be scaleable including:
- processing and data bandwidth;
- storage capacity and object count;
- storage performance;
- storage device independence – the product can support diverse data storage technologies including:
o disk;
o tape;
o optical technologies including MO, DVD, holographic;
o other technologies needed;
o third party hardware (in the case of need).
2. Target protocol independence – the product can export storage through multiple, different and incompatible storage protocols.
3. Hardware platform independence – the product architecture and software components could be hardware independent as much as possible, and shall not rely on proprietary hardware.
4. Simplified unified management interface – all system components can be manageable through a common simplified user interface.
Common look and feel:
- online help – any required management functions will include relevant online help resources;
- high reliability, availability and usability – the system can automatically detect, configure, monitor and repair or failover its own resources;
- high serviceability – the system can provide a common integrated serviceability environment for all the system components that includes:
o automatic fault isolation to the FRU level;
o automatic fault notification Framework equivalent to iPlatform capabilities;
o support for iLink services (motive);
o simplified policy based management - where necessary automatic functions shall be configurable and controllable through clear and simple policies.
Generic hardware configuration for the project:
The solution runs under Linux operating system.
